Zendaya: The Gold of Athena

On July 15th in New York, hours before joining The Tonight Show, Zendaya stepped into the summer light wearing Jitrois. A custom creation imagined with her longtime stylist Law Roach: the Massai Minoray top and the Newton skirt, both cut in champagne stretch lambskin, worn as one continuous line of gold.

In Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Zendaya embodies Athena. Throughout the premieres, she had appeared in white — the goddess of wisdom, luminous and serene. Then came the gold. The press read the shift instantly: after the contemplative deity, the warrior. Horizontal bands of leather wrap the body "like a bronze cuirass," wrote Red Carpet Fashion Awards; like "statue carvings," observed W Magazine; "warrior-worthy," added British Vogue. An armor, a sculpture — and yet nothing here is rigid. The lambskin stretches, breathes, follows. It is armor made soft, protection turned into movement.

We recognized something intimate in those readings. Jitrois was born from role play — from the therapeutic practice of Jean-Claude Jitrois, where becoming someone passed first through what one wears. The house has carried that conviction ever since: a garment is not a costume you hide behind, but a skin that lets you step into the role. Each band of this look was worked by hand in our ateliers so that the leather would hold the light the way bronze does, while moving the way only a second skin can. The high slit of the Newton skirt does not interrupt the silhouette; it releases it, one step at a time.

There is no excess in this gold. It does not shine — it glows, the way champagne does, the way a goddess might choose to walk among mortals: unmistakable, and perfectly at ease.

Zendaya did not wear a costume of Athena. She put on a skin, and the goddess appeared.
